During the Coronavirus pandemic, your child will be at home a lot more. This is a great time to build your relationship with your child, and make the most of your time. During mealtimes, or when you’re with your child, these questions will get you started. Rather than asking lots of questions at one time, use one as the starting point for a two-way conversation.
Begin by asking your child the question, and listen to the answer, remembering to summarise what you think your child is saying, so they know you understand. It’s OK to correct something they have misunderstood, However, if they express an opinion, respect their views. Ask them what has led them to come to their conclusions.
Where you can, hold back on expressing your own opinions. But feel free to share your thoughts if your child asks you for your point of view. You can add your own thoughts at the end if you’d like.
The idea is to listen to your child, and get to know them better. If they say, ‘I don’t know’ you can reply with, ‘take a guess – what do you think?’
